Building Strong Classrooms | Teacher Mentorship Program
Starting a teaching career comes with excitement, opportunity, and a steep learning curve. At Medicine Hat Public School Division, new teachers don't have to navigate that journey alone.
For years, the New Teacher Mentorship Program, facilitated in partnership with the Alberta Teachers' Association, has helped educators build confidence, refine their practice, and feel connected as they begin their careers. Led by dedicated facilitators and supported by experienced mentor teachers, the program brings together new teachers and educators who are new to the division for collaborative learning throughout the school year.
This year, participants explored key elements of the division's Optimal Learning Environment framework, including quality evidence of learning, impactful instruction, intentional learning design, and engaged learning culture. Using the resource Welcome to Teaching as a guide, each session created opportunities for discussion, reflection, and practical application in the classroom.
The impact of the program is reflected in participant feedback. Mentees described the experience as "valuable," "engaging," and "assuring," while mentor teachers noted that the sessions helped refresh important strategies and strengthen their own practice.
Success looks different for every teacher, but some of the most meaningful moments come when educators connect theory to practice through "lightbulb moments" that help shape their confidence and approach in the classroom.
By fostering collaboration, reflection, and practical support, the program helps make the complex work of teaching more manageable, empowering new teachers to feel supported, capable, and ready to thrive.
